InTheShop: Beginning Bending Ply
Small Objects, Big Ideas #2
The initial experiments in laminating and bending plywood. With the eventual project in mind being a bent ply lounge chair depending on the perfect curve reflected through several pieces, these initial objects represent the first step toward figuring out the technique and required technologies. Rather than experiment and practice with pieces to have them only end up on a shelf of prototypes, I decided to use the opportunity to make small, useful objects that can be sold, with the profits going towards the materials for the chair.
Beautiful objects on their own, these jewelry stands or displays are formed of various wood veneers-- so far, these are Birch, Walnut, teak, and Mahogany-- with steel hardware acting as a counterweight on the back end. Each one is unique and handmade–cut, laminated, formed, finished, and packaged, by hand.
